Netherlandish Art: 1400-1600 by Henk van Os,
The period from 1400 to 1600 was a fascinating one in Netherlandish art art works and history, encompassing the late Middle Ages, the Renaissance, the Iconoclasm, the Dutch Revolt, art works and the northern cities' conversion to the Protestant faith, which put an end to the previously close ties between north art works and south. This handsome book presents an overview of the period by means of a selection of one hundred works of art in different media taken from the unparalleled collection of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. Eminent authorities place these works in their historical context art works and discuss their origins, significance, art works and distinguishing features. The result is an authoritative history of fifteenth art works and sixteenth-century Netherlandish art. The book is arranged chronologically in three sections, each opening with a brief introduction that sketches the historical art works and art-historical outlines of the period art works and each including reproductions art works and discussions of the works of art. In addition, longer essays in the beginning of the book address such issues as how the function art works and meaning of works of art change when they become part of a museum; how the picture of Netherlandish art presented by the Rijksmuseum has evolved over the two centuries of its existence; how the works of art came into being; art works and how art works and for whom they were made art works and traded. Although the book focuses on works from the Rijksmuseum, it includes illustrations of key works from other sources as well. This book is the first in a four-part series about Dutch art that will be invaluable for visitors to the Rijksmuseum art works and for art lovers everywhere.

One Place After Another: Site-Specific Art and Locational Identity

One Place After Another: Site-Specific Art and Locational Identity
Site-specific art emerged in the late 1960s in reaction to the growing commodification of art art works and the prevailing ideals of art's autonomy art works and universality. Throughout the 1970s art works and 1980s, as site-specific art intersected with land art, process art, performance art, conceptual art, installation art, institutional critique, community-based art, art works and public art, its creators insisted on the inseparability of the work art works and its context. In recent years, however, the presumption of unrepeatability art works and immobility encapsulated in Richard Serra's famous dictum "to remove the work is to destroy the work" is being challenged by new models of site specificity art works and changes in institutional art works and market forces."One Place after Another offers a critical history of site-specific art since the late 1960s art works and a theoretical framework for examining the rhetoric of aesthetic vanguardism art works and political progressivism associated with its many permutations. Informed by urban theory, postmodernist criticism in art art works and architecture, art works and debates concerning identity politics art works and the public sphere, the book addresses the siting of art as more than an artistic problem. It examines site specificity as a complex cipher of the unstable relationship between location art works and identity in the era of late capitalism. The book addresses the work of, among others, John Ahearn, Mark Dion, Andrea Fraser, Donald Judd, Rene Green, Suzanne Lacy, In(c) Manglano-Ovalle, Richard Serra, Mierle Laderman Ukeles, art works and Fred Wilson.
